So after tons of stories about Britney doing goofy and spooky things, and then stories about Britney doing nothing, we now have Britney actually doing something right.

Rather than going back to court and fighting over the details, it appears that Britney has agreed to give sole custody of her two children to their father, Kevin Federline. She will have visitation rights, but he will be the legal custodial parent.

Britney clearly has troubles, and they seemed to be getting the best of her for several months. Erratic behavior, violent outbursts, and just downright crazy ‘I’m-out-of-my-Xanax’-type antics kept her in the headlines. Hospital stays, car accidents, court appearances she dodged, and bizarre behavior that might have shocked some patients already in institutions were all we heard about. After the loss of custody, and a comeback performance on TV that was universally panned by critics and fans, things weren’t looking good for the pop star. Finally, a scary moment when she refused to relinquish the boys after a visit and holed up with them in her house, made it clear that nothing short of a meltdown was in progress. And the ones most likely to be burned by it were here two small children.

Her father was made her conservator, in charge of all of her affairs. She was given monitored visits with the children. She had a couple of critically-praised appearances on a TV show. And we don’t know this for sure, but maybe the people she’d been spending her hours with while drinking, partying and having her crotch captured on camera weren’t surrounding her much anymore. Just maybe, daddy kicked them to the curb?

Now, in a refreshing surprise, she’s agreed to give up custody of the boys. When so many people will fight over the little ones, sometimes more out of spite than a genuine desire to be a full-time parent, we can’t help but applaud her decision, and find ourselves cheering for her with more enthusiasm than we have in a long time. This decision does not mean she won’t ever be able to regain custody. Things change, and cases do go back to court for revision. But for right now, it
appears that Britney has started to grow up, and thanks to her Dad (and we hope her own maturing decision-making skills) she’s done the responsible thing.
